Cutters for the skin can have different shapes (straight, pivoting, round, serrated, semicircular, girdle and others). In this review we will tell and show how to make a semi-circular knife in the shape of a crescent moon, which is used for cutting and grinding this material.
This type of knife is also called saddlery. We will make the blade from a steel saw blade of a sufficiently large diameter, which is no longer suitable for sawing wood.
First of all, we will make a paper pattern and draw a marker on it using the marker on the saw blade. Then we cut the workpiece using a grinder with a cutting disc, remove the burrs along the edges, grind and sharpen the blade.
The main stages of work
At the next stage, we will temper the metal with a pair of gas burners and oil, holding the part with elongated pliers or tongs. Next - pickle the workpiece with ferric chloride.
Now we make a handle from a piece of wood. The wood should be strong enough so as not to crack during mechanical processing and further use of the product. Using a band saw, we cut the workpiece. We will prepare a metal ring, which will serve as a clamp for the handle.
We grind the workpiece under it, trying on a ringlet. We bring the handle to proper condition with a planer, sanding belt and sandpaper. Meanwhile, the pickling is completed, and the blade must be sharpened again on a grinding machine.
Having drilled a hole in the handle, we insert a blade into it, knocking it out with a hammer. We give more shine to our homemade knife, and it is ready to use. The homemade crescent knife turned out to be very convenient and original! See the video on the website for details.
