In this article I am going to make a small portable miter saw powered by a 12 V power supply. It will be powerful enough to cut a 2.5 cm thick wooden beam in no time.
This tool will be convenient for sawing wood and at the same time portable due to its small size. The saw is made of universally available materials, and the electric motor is taken strictly from the drive mechanism of the car wipers.
Production of a bed for a saw
For the bed we used a 10 mm thick fiberboard sheet. First, using a jigsaw, we cut a circle with a diameter of 20 cm and cleaned its edges.
Foot fixing
Four legs serve to elevate the base above the surface. Each is made of 1/2 inch PVC pipe. For a more elegant look, each leg was cut at an angle of 24 degrees.
Then all four legs were glued evenly to the bottom of the fiberboard bed.
Preparing the base for the cutting arm
A wooden beam serves as the basis for the installation of the lever. Its thickness is 2.5 cm, length is 5 cm, and it is cut at an angle of 25 degrees. Then this beam was sanded and glued to the bottom of the bed.
Cutting arm support
We used a square aluminum pipe 10 mm thick. Two pipes were cut at an angle of 25 degrees, and their length was 60 mm.
Then they were attached to a wooden beam using centimeter wood screws.
Cutting lever and handle
The handle is made of the same aluminum profile pipe. First, prepare a 25-centimeter segment. Then one of its edges is ground with a rounding inward so that the handle of the PVC pipe can be firmly glued to it.
Next, the cutting lever is fixed between the supports with a bolt screwed through the drilled holes. The other end of the bolt is fixed with two nuts.
Electric motor and basis for its fastening
The engine used in this project was removed from the drive of the wipers of an old car. It is powered by a 12-volt power supply.
The basis for installing the electric motor was made of three fiberglass plates glued together. First, mounting holes are drilled, and then the engine is attached to the base with bolts and nuts.
Motor installation
The engine is attached to the cutting arm with bolts and nuts.
Return mechanism
For the return mechanism, we used an old spring, extracted from the spare parts of the car. One of its ends was connected through a hole drilled in the cutting lever, and the other was bolted to its base.
This mechanism will provide a more convenient return of the lever to its previous position.
Circular Saw
I put in a 100mm disc, which is commonly used in angle grinders.
Saw wiring
The electric motor is connected to the 6 mm plug of the power supply via a switch. The saw is driven by a 12-volt power supply.
Protective cover
The protective cover is made of 100 mm PVC pipe. A pipe cut is made, and half of it is securely glued to the cutting arm directly above the blade.
First, an insert is made into the bed, and then a wooden support is glued perpendicular to the cut.
End result and face saw operation
The end result is impressive. The tool is compact and lightweight. He can easily cut a wooden block 2.5 cm thick. The best thing about this machine is that it is made of ordinary and inexpensive materials and is driven by a 12 V power supply.
