With the mechanical wear of the brake pads, their thickness gradually decreases, while the piston that presses on them goes beyond the limits of its "nest". And to install new brake pads, it must be pressed back into the cylinder. For this purpose the device for compression of a support is useful.

To make this homemade tool you will need two brake pads from the front disc brakes, one bolt with a diameter of 12 mm and a length of 120 mm, an M12 nut, one bolt with a diameter of 6 mm and a length of 30 mm, as well as a small piece of steel chain with large links.

The main stages of work

The first step is to remove the remaining friction material from the pads. This can be done using angle grinders. In the middle of the stripped plates we drill holes with a diameter of 6 mm. Then in one of the blocks we drill a hole up to 12 mm. Next, insert the bolt into the resulting hole and screw the nut on it.

This nut must be welded to the plate from the brake pad. To prevent damage to the threads on the stud during welding, simply put a piece of metal tube over it. Next, remove the tube, and in the center of the bolt we drill a hole with a diameter of 5 mm. Then we cut the thread under the M6 bolt with a tap.

Using a grinder, we cut off the hook ears on the brake pads, and for a more aesthetic look, the tool for compressing the caliper can be painted with ordinary spray paint. Next, three links must be cut from the chain and rigidly connected to each other by welding. In the center of the resulting part, we weld a bolt. And now the home-made tool is ready to go.
